Buffalo Chip, SD (July 5, 2016) – Many celebrities attend the annual rally each year, but it can be difficult to locate a favorite star among the crowds. The Buffalo Chip’s signature charity event the Legends Ride has long been known as the most likely event at which fans may meet Hollywood stars and motorcycle industry celebrities. So far for 2016 billionaire businessman and philanthropist John Paul DeJoria, movie and TV star Tom Berenger, writer, director, producer and actor Carmine Cangialosi, and a host of motorcycle industry leaders have confirmed they will attend the 2016 “Ride that RocksTM” on Monday, Aug. 8. More celebrities will be announced as the event draws nearer.

More Than a Handshake and an Autograph

Although meeting and riding with celebrities has been enough reason for this event to sell out for eight consecutive years, guests will also feel great knowing the Buffalo Chip will donate 100 percent of their rider fees to some very worthy local charities. In an effort to help create a permanent athlete training facility for Special Olympians in the Black Hills, $100,000 in future Legends Ride fees have been pledged to renovate an existing facility to meet the growing needs of the organization. The 127 Special Olympians who are members of the “Rapid City Flame” team have been training in various borrowed locations over the past few years, but they are now in need of a facility that will offer team members a sense of permanence and accomplishment. For the past three years, Legends Ride contributions have been used to purchase a van to transport participants to practices and events; now the need for a facility is a priority.

Librarian of Congress Names Smokey Robinson Next Recipient of the Library of Congress Gershwin Prize for Popular Song

One of Music’s Greatest Living Lyrical Poets

Acting Librarian of Congress David Mao today announced that Smokey Robinson is the next recipient of the Library of Congress Gershwin Prize for Popular Song.

A rhythm and blues icon whose career has spanned more than 50 years, Robinson is considered the poet laureate of soul. His velvet falsetto and incomparable mastery of lyrical verse have created a tapestry of hits that have transcended generations and become a mainstay in American pop music. As a producer, record executive and visionary, Robinson helped lead a musical revolution called the Motown sound.

Robinson will receive the prize in Washington, D.C., in November. The Gershwin Prize honors a living musical artist’s lifetime achievement in promoting the genre of song as a vehicle of cultural understanding; entertaining and informing audiences; and inspiring new generations. Previous recipients are Paul Simon, Stevie Wonder, Sir Paul McCartney, songwriting duo Burt Bacharach and the late Hal David, Carole King, Billy Joel and Willie Nelson.

“As a singer, songwriter, producer and record executive, Smokey Robinson is a musical legend,” said Acting Librarian of Congress David S. Mao. “His rich melodies are works of art—enduring, meaningful and powerful. And he is a master at crafting lyrics that speak to the heart and soul, expressing ordinary themes in an extraordinary way. It is that quality in his music that makes him one of the greatest poetic songwriters of our time.”

“It gives me such joy and gratitude to be included among the past recipients of this most prestigious songwriting award,” Robinson said.

The Grammy Award winner has released dozens of Top-40 hits and added more than 4,000 songs to his legacy songbook. His music reads like a playlist of Motown’s greatest hits—”Mickey’s Monkey” (1963), “Going to a Go-Go” (1966), “You’ve Really Got a Hold on Me” (1963), “Ooo Baby Baby” (1965), “The Tracks of My Tears” (1965), “More Love” (1967), “I Second That Emotion” (1967), “Baby, Baby Don’t Cry” (1969), “The Tears of a Clown” (co-written with Stevie Wonder, 1970), “Cruisin’” (1979), “Being With You” (1981), “Just to See Her” and “One Heartbeat” (1987).

“The Tracks of My Tears” was named to the National Recording Registry of the Library of Congress in 2007 as one of the nation’s culturally, historically or aesthetically significant sound recordings.

Producer and songwriter, Robinson was the creative force behind many Motown classics. “My Girl,” “The Way You Do the Things You Do,” “Get Ready,” “Since I Lost My Baby,” “Ain’t That Peculiar,” “My Guy,” “You Beat Me to the Punch” and “Don’t Mess with Bill” are among the many hit songs that Robinson wrote for other Motown artists. He has crafted lyrics for Marvin Gaye, Mary Wells, Brenda Holloway, The Marvelettes, The Temptations and many others. His music influenced The Beatles—who recorded Robinson and the Miracles’ “You’ve Really Got A Hold On Me” in 1963—The Rolling Stones (“Going To A Go-Go”); Michael Jackson (“Who’s Loving You”) and The Supremes (“I Second That Emotion”).

Born in Detroit in 1940, Robinson founded the Matadors in 1954 when he was in high school. Three years later the group added a female voice and became The Miracles. Berry Gordy’s first vocal group, The Miracles released the single “Shop Around” in 1960, which became Motown’s first million-selling hit.

Robinson’s collaboration with Gordy from day one of the Motown record label grew into a musical dynasty. Producer, talent scout and songwriter for Motown, Robinson also served as the label’s vice president for nearly three decades.

The Miracles was the preeminent R&B group in the 1960s through the early 1970s until Smokey retired from the group in 1972. He returned as a solo performer a year later and continued to create beloved popular classics. His 1975 album, “A Quiet Storm,” was critically acclaimed and in 1987 he won a Grammy for best R&B vocal performance for his single, “Just to See Her,” from his album, “One Heartbeat.”

His accomplishments are many. He has received the Grammy Living Legend Award, NARAS Lifetime Achievement Award, Kennedy Center Honors, the presidential National Medal of Arts Award and the BET Lifetime Achievement Award. He was also inducted into the Rock ‘n’ Roll Hall of Fame and the Songwriters’ Hall of Fame.

2016 Custer Area Arts Council Summer Music Series

By: Herb Ryan

Just a brief note, I along with my wife Peg are members of The Custer Area Arts Council and appreciate all the work they do on these concerts. The musicians are paid to perform so, the concerts are free. If you would like to tip the musicians, please do, there is a bucket on a table where you can show your appreciation. What we are, and always have been against at a free concert. is someone grabbing a microphone pleading for money and shoving a donations bucket in your face. This was done at the June 14  Ray Hadlock and Pegie Douglas concert and I was embarrassed for the community. I did not stay for the end of tonight’s concert but enjoyed the music and watched the people come in off the street and enjoy the FREE CONCERT. The Custer Arts Council will have a donation bucket at its information table. Again, this is a free, no obligation event.

RSD Super Hooligan Throwdown presented by Indian Motorcycle®

Hooligan racing is a throwback to the days when young men lightened and tweaked their street machines into dirt track racers. Roland Sands Design and Indian Motorcycle’s recent efforts to help revive the thrill of flat track racing has reignited a fire that still burns brightly with today’s moto and custom enthusiasts. The dirt oval race track, built by IV League Flat Track, circles the main grounds of the Buffalo Chip infield between the Wolfman Jack Stage and the Top Shelf. Spectators will be lining the raceway where they unquestionably will feel the grit and dust as competitors back it in sideways through the turns and fight for the lead. To make this wild event even more interesting, one of the races will be completely inappropriate; racers may show up in costumes, crazy helmets or whatever strikes their fancy. Hooligan racer Roland Sands and crew are slated to bring out the highly competitive, RSD-modified, Indian Scout Sixty race bikes for battle.

Navy Band Great Lakes “Liberty Call” Enchants the Audience at Main Street Square Sunday

By Herb Ryan

Sunday May 29, 2016
Main Street Square, Rapid City SD – The promo for the Navy Band Great Lakes “Liberty Call”, a patriotic show and swing band repertoire associated with the early 20th century midwest performing at Main Street Square read like a typical military band concert. Foot tapping and singing along with a John Sousa tempo. The set began with a rousing version of the Stars and Stripes, followed by a “Every Day I Have The Blues” a song attributed to Pine Top Sparks and his brother Marion. The song was reworked by Memphis Slim and has reached the top of the charts with versions by Count Basie, Joe Williams and B.B. King. This set the stage for vocalist Danlie Cuenca and the band to capture the hearts of the audience with renditions of, “I just Found Out About Love”, and “It Could Happen To You”, a song written  in 1944 with music by Jimmy Van Huesen and lyrics by Johnny Burke.

Shock set in with the realization that this was not a “parade field band”,  no this was the genuine stuff and if you missed it, please accept my sympathies. Solid sound and seamless transitions into solos and sections. “Basically Blues”, “Love For Sale” and “It Had to Be You”. tough not to hum along and feel it all. “Come By Me” and “Black Coffee”, yeah black coffee, sung by the irrepressible Ella Fitzgerald in 1960 and still remains a popular standard. “Taps” and “God Bless America”  have always been the reminder of what we have sacrificed and the freedom bought with those sacrifices.

The concert closed with an Armed Forces Medley and sustained applause from a very appreciative audience.

Legendary Renegade Willie Nelson

Kicks Off 2016 Sturgis Buffalo Chip® Festival

Buffalo Chip, SD (May 17, 2016) – So many of music’s greatest legends have come and gone. In the world of country music, renegades who played by their own rules like Johnny Cash, Waylon Jennings and Merle Haggard have all left a wave of musical memories in their wake. But one performer who dared to be different and led the movement is still entertaining and will be creating more magical memories at the Sturgis Buffalo Chip® this August. The great Willie Nelson will be giving Buffalo Chip guests a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity as he jumpstarts the Chip’s 35th anniversary party. The living legend will kick-off the party on Friday, Aug. 5 with Drake White. A short video honoring the spirit of rebellion and announcing the performance can be found here: http://bit.ly/S2oE2l

Nelson’s nearly endless portfolio of beloved music has been a soundtrack of his life as well as America’s. Songs like “Hello Walls,” “Crazy,” “Willingly,” “Bloody Mary Morning,” “Blues Eyes Cryin’ in the Rain,” “Mommas Don’t Let Your Babies Grow Up to be Cowboys,” “Good Hearted Woman” and “If You’ve Got the Money, I’ve Got the Time” helped him earn a staggering 11 Grammy Awards, 7 American Music Awards, 9 CMA Awards, 5 Academy of Country Music Awards and many more. Willie Nelson is an 83 year-old American icon who has inspired generations with his talent and independent spirit. His appearance at the Buffalo Chip on Aug. 5 will offer a connection between the people who adore him and the legend who has championed their way of life and American values.

Prior to Willie Nelson’s performance, rising country musician Drake White will also make his way to the Buffalo Chip’s Wolfman Jack Stage. White’s debut Top 40 hit “The Simple Life” propelled him into the spotlight in 2013, and by the end of 2015 “Rolling Stone” said he was “an electric performer with a gospel howl” and “Huffington Post” hailed him as one of the top country artists to watch in 2016.

Paul Larson makes his home in the sacred Black Hills of South Dakota, just a bit outside the small community of Rochford.  In March 2016, Larson received the coveted Golden Harmonica Award. Larson’s music remains true to authentic cowboy music.  Known for his baritone voice and cowboy yodel, he was once introduced by an announcer as “…a man with the voice he’d hire to ride circles around a rangy herd of cows to keep them quiet through the evening.”

Larson is looking forward to being back onstage at The Matthews. “Besides playing beside two of the premier musicians in South Dakota, getting to perform at The Matthews in their beautiful theater and in front of their great audience, is fantastic,” says Paul Larson.  “I can’t wait.”

Singer/songwriter, Boyd Bristow, is a long-time member of A South Dakota Acoustic Christmas. Bristow is a veteran musician that has played with many prestigious groups such as Blueberry Buckle, Poker Alice, Kenny Putnam and the Song Pilots, East of Westreville, and Vince Two Eagles. Besides being a star instrumentalist and composer, Boyd is a terrific singer and responsible for the recording and production on many CD recordings.

“There’s a wonderful trove of cowboy tunes out there and we will be  doing quite a few of them–along with some western swing, ala Bob Wills and the Texas Playboys. Cowboy tunes have a rather poetic language which illustrates an era that is almost gone,” says Boyd Bristow. “The evening will be flowing with fiddle and guitar licks backing up Paul’s baritone vocals,” continues Boyd.

The next event for The Matthews is the children’s theater production of “Alice in Wonderland Jr.,” June 24-26. Tickets are for sale now. For additional information or to learn about upcoming events, visit www.MatthewsOpera.com.
