PIERRE, S.D. – Gov. Dennis Daugaard issued the following statement today in response to the U.S. Supreme Court’s decision on sports betting:
“I welcome this decision because it recognizes the right of states to regulate in this area,” said Governor Daugaard. “Our state constitution, however, does not permit sports betting in South Dakota. A state constitutional amendment could be placed on the 2020 general election ballot through the petition process, or by the State Legislature in 2019 or 2020.”
At this time, the state does not have any reliable estimate as to the economic impact or revenue that could be generated by sports betting.
