South Dakota Secretary of State Sees Steady Decrease in Conceal Carry Weapon Permits

January 5, 2018

PIERRE, S.D. – Today, Secretary of State Shantel Krebs announced the state saw a decline in new and renewed conceal carry weapon permits issued in 2017.

“New and renewed permits were at an all-time high in 2016, with over 30,000 permits processed during the year,” stated Secretary Krebs. “However, in the last 10 months the office has noticed a significant decrease in the number of pistol permits being processed.”

The South Dakota Secretary of State’s office issues the permits after they are approved by the Sheriff in the county where the permit holder resides. County Sheriff’s offices across the state noted a decrease in applications in 2017.

Despite the fall in new and renewed permits, South Dakota has reached an all-time high in total active permits.

“In South Dakota one in six citizens that are eligible for a concealed carry permit currently hold a permit,” said Secretary Krebs.

Below are the figures for new and renewed permits for the past 10 months:

July – 1,331
