HILL CITY, S.D. – One person was killed and three others were injured in a two-vehicle crash that occurred Saturday night south of Hill City.
Names of those involved are not being released pending notification of families.
A 2017 Jeep Cherokee was southbound on U.S. Highway 16 attempting to negotiate a curve. The jeep crossed the center line and collided head-on with a northbound 2014 Kia Sportage.
The 54-year-old male driver of the jeep died from injuries sustained in the crash. The 56-year-old female driver of the Kia suffered serious non-life threatening injuries. Two passengers in the Kia received minor injuries.
Seatbelt use by the two drivers is under investigation. Both passengers in the Kia were wearing seatbelts.
Both the northbound and southbound lanes of U.S. Highway 16 were closed for two hours due to the crash.
The South Dakota Highway Patrol is investigating the crash. Other agencies on scene were the Pennington County Sheriff’s Office, Hill City Ambulance and Hill City Fire, Search and Rescue.
