Despite some smoke in the area from the recent Montana fires, a record number of spectators enjoyed seeing the Studebaker car and truck show in downtown Custer on Sunday, September 3, 2017. Ballots for a favorite car or truck were cast by 1,096 spectators who declared they were from 32 states and six foreign countries including Canada, Mexico, Germany, Netherlands, England and Italy.
Wining the highest total of votes was a 1937 white President Coupe owned by Steve and Pat Brown from Ft. Pierre. Second highest total cast was for a 1958 Transtar ½ ton 4 X 4 pickup owned by Rob and Janet Young from Black Hawk, SD. And winning third place was a 1957 white with red trim on the fins Golden Hawk restored and owned by Larry and Diane Hradec from Norfolk, Nebraska.
In addition, participants in the show also voted for their favorite Studebakers. Receiving the highest number of votes for a truck was a 1951 dark blue 2R11 ¾ ton pickup owned by Jim and Julie Smoragiewicz from Rapid City. The members also selected their favorite car which was the Golden Hawk owned by Larry and Diane Hradec.
The event was sponsored by the Dakotas Chapter of the Studebaker Drivers Club. They will also host the 2018 regional, zone meet of members in Custer over the Labor Day weekend.
