Custer, SD – Crazy Horse Composite Squadron Civil Air Patrol Holds Open House Saturday at Custer County Airport Saturday November 5, 2016. With good attendance and perfect flying weather, the cadets of the squadron were busy talking to visitors and giving potential cadet recruits the full tour. Captain Kris Bierwith, CAP Crazy Horse Composite Squadron Commander had said earlier in the day, “Two and a half years ago we had 15 members on the books.
But only 2 cadets and 3 senior members showed up for meetings – the county considered cancelling the program. Today we have 9 cadets and counting with 10 senior members, a very active program thanks to everyone’s hard work and commitment”.

“For anyone interested in joining the Civil Air Patrol in Custer, we do have quite a few benefits and educational opportunities. We offer cadet leadership programs along with aerospace and search and rescue programs. We were recently called up to assist in a search and rescue mission on the Pine Ridge Reservation looking for three missing individuals”. said Captain Kris Bierwith, CAP Crazy Horse Composite Squadron Commander. “We do have orientation flights in gliders and powered aircraft that start 2 months after a cadet has joined. We also have a program where the cadets at the age of 16 after meeting certain requirements can attend a week of schooling and can at the end of that week,  fly solo”. said Bierwith.

Other benefits: an enhanced college or work resume with the Civil Air Patrol experience listed. If a cadet decides to join the U.S. Air Force and completes the requirements for the Billy Mitchell Award, the equivalent of the Boy Scouts, Eagle Scout Award, he or she will go into the Air Force one rank higher than a regular recruit.

The minimum age for a new cadet, male or female is 12 years old. Bierwith said ” The fee for joining the Civil Air Patrol is $ 32.00 annually. While we try to provide uniforms for everyone, sometimes the parent has to purchase them. The first year cost for the uniform and membership is $100.00″
