Sunday Rally Riders on The Needles Highway

By Herb Ryan

The Needles Highway is a road that demands respect for its endless beauty, and  the seemingly endless serpentine corners that can toss a motorcycle off that narrow ribbon of asphalt at any time. The accident rate can and does require emergency services multiple times in the Custer Area during bike week. As a precaution, Custer County Search and Rescue has a command center in Custer State park where they monitor emergency channels for calls for service. In the event of an accident in the park, they will respond to the scene and setup traffic control and evaluate possible injuries and pass that information on to other emergency responders.
Driving a Jeep Wrangler on the Needles Highway during bike week is something I would not usually do.This year, it seems different, the riders are more civil, courteous, and the bikes are not loud. Nobody is tailgating, or being obnoxious. This was the best ride yet and I want to thank all the riders for their consideration, you will definitely have mine.
